Visit From the Happy Couple

Lydia and Wickham visited today, and my excitement has flourished even more. It is amazing how well everything has been going lately, but I am still upset at Lydia for running off like she did, and I let her know how I felt about it. She replied that we shall come visit her often, and I agreed. Although Lydia finds no harm in what she has done, I am still extremely happy for her. Elizabeth believes Mr. Wickham doesn't like Lydia at all, but all I have to say is who cares? If Lydia hadn't married Wickham, we'd be a family of terrible social status, and who would want that?

  1. Dear Mother, I wish that you would learn that marriage is not about social status. Marriage is about the love that two people share and their passion for one another. I feel as if you have your priorities off track because you would rather have a greater social status then a happy daughter.

  2. Honestly mother, have you no heart at all. You should have empathy for your Lydia who, because of arranged circumstances, will face a loveless life until Wickham dies. Even though Lydia has made a grave mistake, which i'm glad that you recognize, she will now be subject to a marriage that was obviously a mistake. It was either us or her that had to take the fall, and, being the loving people that we are, we made her do it. Nothing can be changed now, but at least feel sorry for your daughter and not happy for yourself. She will now have to face a marriage as void of love as yours.
