Lydia's Huge Mistake

OH NO! Lydia has run off with a soldier without anyone's permission, and that soldier is Wickham. How dreadful this situation is---Oh! I can hardly stand it, for I am so sadly grieved. It is told that they are to get married, but how will that happen? Both have little money, for they are not able to afford it! With Lydia being only sixteen, this is awful. She is such a young girl and does not know what she is doing yet. Oh how this will ruin the entire fortune of the family! We will be the news of the entire decade, but the news circulating will not be good. This is terrible!

  1. Dear Mother,
Please try to relax yourself. Everything occurs for a reason and I believe that good will come out of Lydia's sudden elopement. Maybe Lydia and Wickman will not marry. You should not stress yourself over matters that have not even occurred yet.

  2. I understand your concern, but I have faith in Wickham. Nobody could have a plan to harm Lydia. I'm sure she will be home shortly. When she arrives, we must tell her never to play a joke like this again. It was not humorous at all.

  3. Mother, I feel that this is one of the few times that we may actually agree on something. Lydia has run off and blanketed our family with more embarrassment than I ever thought possible, even from you. Of all people I thought would ruin the families reputation, Lydia definitely scored a close second to mommy dearest. However, my venting will achieve nothing. All I can tell you is that you must not fall apart in this situation. You must help Jane remain strong in all of the ordeals that are for sure to present themselves. Be a mother for once.

  4. My dear don't let your nerves get the best of you. Instead, find comfort in the fact that this occurence won't be forgoten in more than a single decade; it is more likely people will remember for a few generations. I'm sure this event will do us good, for no one will forget the name of 'Bennet'. Our name will go down throughout britain in infamy, even now I can hear the whispers of people as we pass, "that's a Bennet! You mean their relative of that scandalous girl, Lydia? We shouldn't associate with such people; their luck could be contagious!"

  5. I agree. Lydia is such a thoughtlees, foolish child. I just knew that she should not be trusted to go to Brighton alone, yet nobody listened to me. Now look at the mess she has gotten into; also, she has made us all go crazy. This is such a dreadful situation!
